I read this big ass preview on a magazine that described the game as the ultimate simulation game, like you'd give the villager a ball and they'd invent soccer and sh*t like that, and the final game was NOTHING like that

Then I watched it happen again with fable
In short, frick Peter Molyneux

diablo 3, dragon's dogma 2, starfield, dragon age 2, fallout 76, wartales, bannerlord, alien:isolation(looks and sounds great but trash gameplay), metro last light and exodus, deus ex: mankind divided, dishonored 2, biomutant, overlord 2....

cant believe this actually happened
>be me living in some country during the age of myself being around 22
>purchase fear & hunger after hearing good manifestation about game
>boot up mercenary
>lose coinflip to guard and literally get raped and acquire coveted "severe anal bleeding" debuff
>decide it is time to stop being play for the rest of the day or year perhaps
>decide to go outside and try to find moose dropping their horns as it is that time of the year again when moose (or meese plural) drop their horns
>after playing that game fear and hunger and walking around in deep forest i start to feel like the tormented one myself
>just as i hear grunting of moose dropping horns in nearby thicket of many trees a fricking cop police vehicle run near me and stop in my near
>"what you doing so late at night around some weird forestation or something"
>i explain to bobby that at this time of year and in this part of the country we can find meese dropping horns and i want to find and look the bald moose or even horn remains to put on wall (as decoration not honor)
>bobby (feds) think i am insane and proceed to lock me up...
>just as i am heading to the penintentiary or jailhouse i get a message on my phone
>some moose just sent a message "frick my neck feels so relieved i feel like anvil was removed from head ahahaha time to grow new horns"
>explain everything perfectly and get early released from prison/cage very swiftly
>go home finish fear & hunger and wasnt disappointed

diablo 3 was the only one that really burned me.

part of the reason I never got burned again is that I'm very picky with games, and many overly hyped games just don't really look appealing to me. for example, many people say that No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk, and F76 are good now but I still have zero interest in playing them for myself.

Fable 1. I spent hours and hours on forums before the game came out talking about how amazing it was going to be. I bought into the whole "you can plant a seed and watch a tree grow" sh*t. It was the first and last game I ever pre-ordered.

Republic - The Revolution
It sounded so great in the previews and the pictures look nice. You got the impression that this was this deep political game where you could do underhanded stuff to get ahead and outplay your opponent, all while freely moving through a big city.
Turns out you spend 95% of the time looking at fricking pie charts, using the same commands every single turn.

I don't remember what did it, I just know that it happened.

still enjoyed the generic singleplayer and getting all of the achievements but the multiplayer died long before i was done with it

a great game i played for hundreds of hours but it didn't replace dragon's dogma online which capcom took away from me and left nothing similar to it

i still want to get hyped about slop because it's fun

Warcraft 3 Reforged

Being super excited for Twilight Princess. Expecting the Twilight Realm to be the 3D Zelda's equivalent of ALttP's Dark World. Or at least something as significant as OoT's past and future. Or at the absolute minimum like the ages/seasons of the Oracle games.

But no. Twilight Princess's titular Twilight Realm, is literally fricking empty. Not some "oh boy there is no meaningful content" or whatever the frick people levy towards open world games that are full of content everywhere. But the Twilight Realm is literally fricking empty outside the couple of singular points you need to visit to progress the story.
Beyond that the Twilight Realm is still as vast as the regular Hyrule. Only, it's literally empty. No items. No enemies. No NPCs. Nothing. It's empty.

It genuinely remains one of my absolute biggest videogame related disappointments of my life.
I always wanted to see the 3d games do ALttP's Dark World thing. And everything leading up to actually playing and experience TP's disappointment personally, suggested that TP would be the game to do it. But it wasn't Not even close. Not even remotely. I am still kind of miffed about it. Still upset. Still disappointed to this day.
Midna is cute though.

Pokemon in general, but more specifically how hilariously expensive it was to CATCH'EM ALL in the 3rd generation

I wanna add that gaming was already in its death throes when they realised mmo was wayyy more profitable than single player, and gaming lost all of its charm the very moment they started focusing on multiplayer.

I don't think I've ever felt more betrayed and disappointed

Fallout 3
Though I should have learned my lesson with Oblivion.
I can still look forward to some games, just not the big ones, and I'm able to dial my excitement down as needed. So sh*t like HW3 does not catch me off guard nowdays.

Max Payne 3 or Hitman Absolution.

No Man's Sky is the big one for me, have barely pre ordered games since then. I don't care if it's a good game now, that sh*t was do disappointing on release with how much they talked it up that I'll never trust a developer's words again. If you don't provide in depth gameplay trailers, then I'm not picking that game up.

Fallout 76 to a lesser extent as well. Though that more just eliminated my trust in companies trying to include multi-player features into existing single player franchises.
