During an interview for Netflix’s series “Squid Game” Season 2 on January 15 at a café in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Choi Seung-hyun opened up about his regrets. He shared, “Due to my mistakes, I deeply hurt and disappointed my beloved family and caused harm to the BIGBANG members. While I enjoyed immense glory and love in my twenties, the fall and subsequent collapse were experiences unlike anything I’d faced before. Those were pitch-black times. I was utterly broken, and I lacked the strength to get back up, leading me to want to give up on everything.”

Reflecting on his behavior, he continued, “It pained me to see fans waiting for our comeback. Social media was my only outlet for communication, but I was in such a dark place at the time that I acted rashly and lacked judgment. I deeply regret the foolish words I said and feel ashamed. I was not in my right mind. I regret my actions and will reflect on them for the rest of my life.”

In July 2017, Choi Seung-hyun received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, for marijuana use. Declared unfit for active duty, he was discharged from his conscripted police service and completed his alternative service as a public service worker. Following these events, he avoided significant entertainment activities, instead remaining active on social media.

In 2019, when a netizen left a comment on SNS saying “Reflect on yourself. Don’t use SNS. Don’t come back”, Choi Seung-hyun directly replied, “Yes! I have no intention of doing so. Just look at animal pictures.” In 2020, during a live broadcast, he remarked, “I won’t make a comeback in Korea. I don’t want to return at all. And please stop writing articles about me. People are too cruel. I wish they had more love.”

Choi Seung-hyun later ventured into wine businesses and joined a private lunar expedition project, distancing himself from the entertainment industry. In May 2023, he officially announced his departure from BIGBANG, saying, “I already shared my decision to leave. Since last year, I’ve been facing a new chapter in my life.” He even marked a symbolic “X” over the word “BIGBANG” in a captured image of an article referring to him as “BIGBANG T.O.P”, clearly delineating his separation.

During the interview, Choi Seung-hyun reaffirmed his decision to leave BIGBANG, apologizing for the damage his actions caused to the group and YG Entertainment. He said, “I brought great harm to the team and the agency. Years ago, I decided to leave to prevent further harm. I have to bear the consequences of my actions on my own. Rejoining the group would only attach the stigma of my mistakes to the other members. It’s something I couldn’t bear, so I decided to leave.

When asked if the other members tried to dissuade him from leaving, Choi Seung-hyun hesitated, saying, “It’s hard for me to comment on that. I think it would be inappropriate to speak for the members or anyone not present here.” He also admitted that he has not kept in touch with the other members, citing his overwhelming feelings of guilt and shame.

Reflecting on BIGBANG’s final group project “Still Life” (released in 2022), Choi Seung-hyun said, “I considered it our last project as BIGBANG and worked with all my heart. While some fans still hope for a reunion, it pains me deeply to see those posts. I feel a lifetime of guilt toward the members and fans. I’m sincerely sorry for the harm my words and actions caused.”

Regarding his controversial social media interactions, Choi Seung-hyun explained, “Some of the comments came from malicious commenters, not fans. I was in a very dark place at the time and acted recklessly. It’s something I deeply regret even now.”

Choi Seung-hyun concluded with a promise to express himself more maturely in the future, nodding repeatedly as he vowed to improve.
