After splitting with the Tokens inthe 1970s, Medress worked with a record company executive named Tony Orlando, persuading him to handle vocals on "Knock Three Times" a move that catapulted the song into pop history. Medress and production partner Dave Appell also produced the Orlando and Dawn hit "Candida." In the 1980s, Medress helped former Army Spc. Jared J.

Raymond When Jared J. Raymond came home in July, his mother rented him a Corvette and bought him Red Sox tickets. The town installed a blinking road sign at the end of his street: "Welcome Home Jared." "He was one in a million," said Jean Marino, who recalled the polite boy who grew up across the street and liked to make snow angels in her backyard. Raymond, 20, of Swampscott, died Sept. 19 in Balad when his vehicle struck an explosive.

He graduated high school in 2004 and was assigned to Fort Hood. Raymond loved fast cars, yearned to buy a 1970 Chevelle SS and wanted to study criminal justice and eventually become a Boston cop. "He didn't complain about boot camp. He didn't complain about the 135-degree heat in Iraq," said Jarred Wiedenroth, a friend. "He was glad to do it because he thought it was the right thing to do." Raymond liked sports and played lacrosse in high school, and read car manuals as some teenagers read comic books.

He was raised by his mother, Jaclyn, and his grandparents, Agnes and Jack. Marine Pfc. Christopher T. Riviere Christopher T. Riviere was proud of being in the Marines, correcting anyone who confused it with another branch of the military.

Once he even chastened his aunt when, during a phone conversation, she mimicked what she thought was the Marine call. "He said, "You're doing it wrong. That's the Army call," said Connie Pie. Riviere, 21, of Cooper City, died Sept. 26 after being struck by small-arms fire in Anbar province.

He was assigned to Kaneohe Bay. He graduated high school in 2004 and after trying both work and college, he decided to enlist in the Marines, joining in September 2005. He always made sure to keep an eye on his two little sisters, ages 10 and 14, Pie said, acting like a protector and second father when dad wasn't home. "He was an all-around good kid. Never in trouble," Pie said.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Margaret and James Lomba. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class David S. Roddy Before enlisting, David S. Roddy worked a few civilian jobs, including one as a clerk at a video rental store. That's where he met Cristale.

"I was returning a movie," she said, smiling at the memory. "He was just so very sweet, and a jokester." They married 11 years ago. Roddy, 32, of Aberdeen, died Sept. 16 from a homemade bomb. He graduated high school in 1992 and was assigned to The Difference Between Counting the Years, and Living Them.

In late 1999, Dave decided to join the Navy as an electrician, a position that helped fill his desire to fix things. "One day he was talking with some guys on the ship about EOD," said hismother, Carol. "He fell in love with it." He started researching how to join an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, the Navy's elite bomb experts, even after being hit by a civilian truck driver and having injuries that required nine surgeries and lots of rehabilitation. "He never gave up on getting into Navy dive school," Carol said of the first step sailors must take to become an EOD technician. "That's how dedicated he was." He also is survived by his children, 10-year-old Jessica and 17-year-old twins, Matthew and Michael.

Army Pfc. Jeffrey P. Shaffer Lisa Adams laughed as she recalled her son's fun-loving, prankster ways. Then she smiled as she pondered what Jeffrey P. Shaffer would think of her reaction.

"I know he'd be mad at me for being so upset, but he's my baby and I can't help but be upset," Adams said. "But, above all, he'd be upset if he thought that people thought he died in vain. He didn't." Shaffer, 21, of Harrison, died Sept. 13 when the Humvee he was riding in passed over a roadside bomb in Ramadi. He was assigned to Bamberg, Germany.

"He was pulling pranks and goofing all the time," said his stepfather, Mark Adams. "He had a really sweet, warm face and smile. He tried to act tough, but he had a really sweet heart." During a surprise visit home in January for his mom's birthday, he and his father played a round of golf. "We were playing so bad, he just stripped down to his shorts and jumped in the water and started grabbing golf balls," said his father. "When we were done, he said, 'I've never had more fun playing golf." He also is survived by his father, Paul Shaffer, girlfriend, Misty Grace and a 2-year-old Miss a day.
